Metal Laser Micromachining Services

Fast laser micromachining of metal parts — stainless steel, aluminum, copper, titanium and more — with high precision for prototyping and production.

Laser micromachining is a highly efficient and cost-effective method for producing fine features in metal components. It is well suited for a wide range of metals, including stainless steel, copper, Nitinol, tantalum, gold, aluminum, and other specialty alloys. The process enables precise material removal while maintaining tight tolerances and consistent part quality, even for complex geometries.

Key Factors in Laser Micromachining Metals

Metal Properties and Laser Selection

The type of metal being micromachined is one of the most important factors in selecting the appropriate laser source. Material reflectivity, thermal conductivity, and the required feature size all influence how efficiently the laser energy couples into the material and how the process performs.

During micromachining, the laser beam is absorbed at the surface of the metal, where its energy is converted to heat. This localized heating causes the material to melt or vaporize in a controlled manner, enabling precise feature formation.

Cut Quality and Process Control

A gas or fluid assist is often used during metal laser micromachining to improve cut quality. This assist helps remove molten material from the cut zone, improves edge definition, and minimizes the heat-affected zone (HAZ), particularly in thicker or more reflective metals.

Infrared (IR) lasers are typically the first choice for micromachining metals, as they offer an effective balance of cut quality, throughput, and cost. When feature sizes below approximately 10 microns are required, ultraviolet (UV) lasers may be used as an alternative, provided the metal thickness is less than 0.003 inches.

Complex Geometries and Multi-Axis Machining

Intricate and complex features can be produced on both flat and tubular metal substrates using high-precision, multi-axis motion systems. This capability allows for tight positional accuracy and repeatability, even on parts with challenging geometries or tight spatial constraints.
